Senior UX/UI Product Designer

Very’s design team is growing, and we want you to be a part of it 🤙. We are looking for a self-motivated Product Designer who is excited to work on a wide variety of design problems and has an appreciation for human-centered design. For more information about Very, go here.

Why work at Very?

The health, happiness, and long-term career growth of our team are a top priority. What does that mean in practice? We give stipends for internet and telephone. We offer up to 21 weeks of maternity leave, 12 weeks of paternity leave, and 12 weeks for adoption or surrogacy. We have a $1,000 office stipend that allows you to make your battle station somewhere you’re excited to work. Each employee gets a professional development stipend to use on conference registration, continuing education, professional memberships, etc... We're a remote-first company, so you can work where you want (in a hammock on the beach, anyone?). But a healthy company culture isn't just about perks. It's about creating an environment where our employees can lead fulfilling lives, both at work and at home. Working overtime for extended periods indicates a fundamental failure in planning or communication. If this happens at Very, it’s a sign that something needs to be reevaluated and corrected. If you’re looking around wondering why people aren’t in “crunch mode,” the answer’s pretty simple. The thing we work hardest at is hiring good people, so we want them to stick around and have a good balance between work and the rest of the important stuff in life.

Our design team believes the best way to bring immediate value to products and users is via a strong relationship between design & technology. We are looking for a designer who understands the complexities of design systems, has an appreciation for iterative design, and has a strategic eye for all things UX.

In particular, we're looking for someone who's interested in stretching their capabilities in data visualization and/or designing for IoT product ecosystems. Do you want to figure out the best way to surface data and ML models so that users can easily understand the info and feel empowered to take action? Are you interested in how a product with hardware and multiple mobile apps should be holistically designed? Then we've got the right challenges and projects for you. We’re not looking for an experienced expert, as much as someone with a good intuition and quick learning curve in this space.

Very has been a remote company since before it became normal — 2011, to be exact. We’ve built a collaborative, tight-knit team that thrives, whether we’re hanging out in person at our annual retreat or coordinating work across time zones. The results show that we’re doing something right. In 2020, we were named one of Inc’s Best Workplaces,Parity.org's Best Companies for Women to Advance List, and Fatherly’s Best Places to Work for Dads.

Clients like Vizio, Clear, iHeart Radio, Hayward, Peloton and more come to us for answers to their thorniest questions. We bring them a world-class product team that delivers end-to-end IoT solutions.

Upon joining the Very design team you will find yourself doing the following on any given day:

  • 🖍 Product Strategy & Concept creation

  • 🗺 User Research & User-flow mapping

  • 🌐 Wireframing

  • 💄 Hi-Fi Design Systems

  • 🎬 Interaction & motion design

  • 📱 Interactive Prototyping & user testing/validation

  • 🙌 Working closely with clients to build trust

  • 👯‍♀️ Collaborating with designer teammates to nerd out on design stuff

If you have experience designing across the web, and mobile platforms, you may be who we are looking for! We believe designers should be close to the project’s codebase, so bonus points if you have a passion for writing HTML, CSS or React (and it's ok if you don't!). We believe in leveling up every day, and that the best designers are the ones who see the big picture and seize the opportunity for improvement.

What You’ll Be Working On

As a Product Designer at Very, you will:

  • Champion the role of human-centered design throughout our organization

  • Contribute to pattern libraries, style guides, and other guideline documentation

  • Be involved in peer-to-peer skill-sharing and team-building activities

  • An online portfolio or work samples that showcase your user-centered design solutions

  • Ability to demonstrate design best practices for the web and mobile apps.

  • Proficiency in wireframing, design, and prototyping tools (we currently use Figma, Sketch, FramerX, etc.)

  • Familiarity of front-end web development, including HTML & CSS & Javascript

  • Bonus points for experience in the Data Viz, Data Science space (familiar with analytics, data, related HCI)

*Note: Don’t get discouraged if you don’t have this level of English officially. What we really care about is that you feel comfortable communicating complex ideas and building rapport with English-speaking clients.

Contract

Your contract with Very will be as an independent contractor for an indefinite period.

This type of contract carries some additional responsibilities for you - you'll have to save some money to take care of taxes and you'll have to pay for public social security (Health and Pension) out of pocket.

That being said, we're confident that our competitive compensation and benefits package (see below) will still mean that you are happy with your take-home amount at the end of each month. For more information about Very and the contract type, see here.
