The Role

As a Senior AI Engineer at Apptegy, you will design and build AI-powered product experiences using modern large language models such as OpenAI and Anthropic. This role is focused on applied AI and translating real user and business problems into intelligent, reliable, and delightful features inside our platform.

You’ll work closely with product, engineering, and design to bring AI capabilities directly into customer workflows, including content generation, summarization, insights, assistants, and automation. Rather than training models from scratch, you’ll focus on how to effectively apply, orchestrate, evaluate, and evolve LLM-based systems in production.

This is a high-impact role for someone who enjoys owning problems end to end, experimenting quickly, and shipping AI features that matter.

What You’ll Do

AI Product Development

  • Design and build AI-powered features using existing LLMs, including content generation, conversational interfaces, summarization, and decision support.

  • Engineer high-quality prompts, tools, and workflows for LLMs, iterating on structure, grounding, and evaluation to ensure reliable outputs.

  • Implement retrieval-augmented generation and other context-injection techniques to connect LLMs with Apptegy’s data safely and effectively.

  • Own the full lifecycle of AI features, from early experimentation and prototyping through production release and iteration.

System Design and Integration

  • Collaborate with backend and frontend engineers to integrate AI capabilities into existing systems and user experiences.

  • Design AI components that are scalable, secure, observable, and cost-aware, with clear failure modes and guardrails.

  • Evaluate tradeoffs between different models, providers, and approaches, and help guide decisions around usage and architecture.

Collaboration and Leadership

  • Partner closely with product managers to shape AI use cases, define success metrics, and prioritize work based on customer impact.

  • Lead by example through high-quality code, thoughtful design decisions, and clear documentation.

  • Mentor and support other engineers, sharing best practices for applied AI development.

  • Communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders about system behavior, limitations, and opportunities.

What You’ll Bring

Experience and Technical Skills

  • 5 or more years of software engineering experience, with at least 2 years building AI-powered systems in production.

  • Strong proficiency in Python, with experience integrating LLM APIs into real applications.

  • Deep understanding of LLM behavior, prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation patterns, evaluation techniques, and common failure modes.

  • Experience building user-facing AI features, not just internal tools or infrastructure.

  • Familiarity with modern AI tooling and frameworks for orchestration, agent patterns, and model abstraction.

  • Comfort working in an iterative, product-driven environment using Agile or Scrum practices.

This role does not require training foundation models from scratch or owning large-scale ML infrastructure. Experience applying existing models effectively is far more important.

What Makes You Stand Out

  • Experience integrating AI into production SaaS products used by non-technical users.

  • Familiarity with Ruby on Rails or willingness to work within an existing Rails and Vue stack.

  • Experience working with Node.js and React in production environments, particularly when integrating AI-powered services into user-facing applications

  • Experience with LLM orchestration, agentic workflows, observability, or evaluation frameworks.

  • Background in applied NLP, information retrieval, or decision-support systems.

  • Experience benchmarking prompts, models, or workflows to improve quality and reliability.
