Principal Product Designer

What you will do

As a Principal Product Designer at Karat, you will regularly exercise your passion for designing elegant, inclusive, and goal-oriented user-experiences. As a pragmatic design thinker, you will work both deeply and broadly across our service, facilitating ideation and employing design strategy. Partnering with analytics, engineering, and product, you will gain insights into user goals, needs, and pain points in order to best solve complex problems.

Karat’s HQ is based in Seattle, Washington, but we are open to remote candidates for this role (within the U.S.). Immigration sponsorship is available for this position.

  • Partner cross-functionally with design, engineering, marketing, and product teams to explore, understand, and advocate for user needs.

  • Lead cross-team conceptualization, solving sophisticated customer-centric problems at the intersection between business, content, design, and technology.

  • Employ design strategy across a variety of service components, championing prioritization when novel and discrete opportunities present themselves.

  • Unite brand and user experience across various customer touch points, while continuing to deliver upon and evangelize a culture of innovation specific to individual persona goals and needs.

  • Lean heavily on formative prototyping to learn from customers, and establish a shared vision with partners and collaborators.

  • Model excellence in product design; mentor fellow designers on projects.

  • Participate in generative research to model design personas, leading to representative journey maps and scenarios of human context.

  • Maintain, grow, and improve design libraries, patterns, and workflows across the organization.

The experience you bring

  • 12+ years of experience in UI/UX, and visual design, with fluency in human-centered design best practices

  • 8+ years of experience designing UI/UX for web-based applications

  • Proven experience performing human-centered design research to understand users, their struggles, and goals

  • Extensive knowledge of the latest design patterns, new technologies, and other developments in the field

  • Well-versed storyteller with strong presentation skills (dedication to define and openly discuss the "why" behind your designs)

  • Empathy, optimism, and active listening when collaborating with other teams and partners

  • Experience with designing software (e.g. dashboards, web apps, downloadable software, operating systems, etc.)

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Ability to thrive in ambiguity; comfortable in a fast-paced, quick-change startup environment

  • Portfolio link is highly recommended
