Deputy Managing Editor

Newsweek is seeking a full-time Deputy Managing Editor to join our London bureau.
The Deputy Managing Editor will assist Newsweek editorial leadership with editorial performance management, operations and administration to ensure the smooth functioning of the newsroom, with a focus on maintaining productivity, high standards and best practices among journalists and editors.
The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, a keen eye for detail, and a passion for fostering a high-performing editorial team.
They will be responsible for overseeing the performance and development of the editorial team. This involves setting and monitoring performance goals, preparing data and conducting regular evaluations, and providing constructive feedback to ensure the team meets its objectives. They will monitor and ensure that reporters and editors are meeting production target requirements. They will have demonstrable experience in management and leadership of editors and reporters as part of a reputable newsroom in a similar role. They will have applicable experience with editing and writing copy to high standards for news journalism. They will have experience with implementing and monitoring performance objectives, including conducting performance management meetings. They will have experience with training staff in the use of newsroom tools and mentoring reporters and editors.
They will be responsible for ensuring Newsweek delivers high-quality reporting that is accurate, fair, and conforms to accepted standards of journalism.
Working hours: This is a full-time role, working 5 days a week, Monday to Friday.
Place of Work: Our office is based in London but you will have the ability to work from home anywhere in the UK.

Key Responsibilities:
Implement performance goals and objectives for the editorial team.
Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback.
Develop and implement performance improvement plans.
Monitor and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure team objectives are met.
Collaborate with other departments to align editorial goals with overall company strategy.
Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities for team members.
Address performance issues and implement corrective actions as needed.
Support editorial leadership to coordinate the daily operations of the newsroom.
Ensure production, communications and Standards processes are followed, and stories adhere to ethical, journalistic and house standards.
Support in developing and executing newsroom strategies and processes in line with Newsweek’s editorial and company objectives.
Ensure staff are following established 1:1 Performance review procedures, including Standards feedback to relevant editors and staff.
Conduct / organise training for staff on all tools and systems used in the newsroom.
Ensure production workflow tools are correctly used and up to date.
Support other Newsweek bureaus’ editorial operations where required. 
Any other reasonable duties as necessary to meet the needs of the business.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field preferred
Proven experience in editorial management or a similar role.
Strong leadership and team management skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to analyze performance data and make informed decisions.
Detail-oriented with a commitment to quality and accuracy.
Several years of editing experience working at a reputable publication.
Organization and planning skills.
Experience using CMS and analytics tools such as Google Analytics, Parse.ly and Microsoft PowerBI.
Experience with Microsoft productivity suite and Teams.
