Communications Designer

Working to solve our climate crisis is the most important mission of our time, and the most exciting problem to be working on. Overstory’s mission is to help solve our climate crisis by providing real-time intelligence about the planet’s vegetation. In our first step toward this mission, we are applying machine learning to satellite imagery to track forests and vegetation, helping to reduce the risk of wildfires and power outages.

We have already proven our business model and we’re all united behind our ambitious vision to scale up this model to help humanity and the planet. We recently raised a round of funding, led by Convective Capital. Other investors include: B Capital Group, Moxxie Ventures, Capital T, Pale Blue Dot and many other climate-focussed investors.

If you want to have a real impact and solve some of the world's most complex challenges with advanced technology, come work with our talented and passionate team. Overstory is based in Amsterdam but we are a remote-first company, with people living all over the U.S. and Europe.

We’re looking for a freelance communications designer to help create marketing materials that clearly explain and sell what we do. You’ll work closely with our Product Design Lead, Marketing Lead and business development team to shape how we tell our story. We expect there to be about 20 hours of work per week but that could increase.

About this role

  • Build marketing materials — one pagers, splash pages, new pages on our company web site and other ideas you’ll come up with. Most will be digital but some print materials will also be important for conferences.

  • Create visual assets for blog posts that support the story.

  • Support the expansion of the Overstory brand by contributing to the brand design system.

  • Establish re-usable processes and components that will empower the marketing and sales team to be more responsive.

  • Create and maintain presentations to make them visually appealing, easy-to-understand and able to tell powerful stories.

  • Communicate and present your work clearly and frequently to teammates.

  • Take full ownership of your work.

  • Communicate about what you think is possible in a defined timeframe and then deliver on it.

About you

You are curious, detail-attentive and you have a client-centric approach. You don’t need to have everything well defined before you act, you’re a self-starter who will make things happen, whether it is putting together an excellent product demo for a prospect or facilitating smooth technical onboarding. You are an excellent communicator and you believe best results are achieved when working together. You have a passion for the urgency of solving our climate crisis. Ideally, you’re in a time zone +/- 3 hours from CET.

Requirements

  • A strong portfolio featuring examples of marketing and brand design work.

  • Exceptional verbal, written and visual communication skills in a fast-paced environment.

  • You’re comfortable iterating and you seek out feedback.

  • You are well-versed in producing assets for both digital and print.

  • You are keen to explore what graphic design means for a geospatial product and to learn more about making maps usable and beautiful.

Nice-to-haves

  • A passion for the urgency of solving our climate crisis.

  • 4+ years of design experience.

  • Experience working on a B2B SaaS product.

  • Experience working at an early-stage startup.

  • You’ve worked with maps / geospatial data. Experience producing static map assets using QGIS is a big bonus as this will be necessary to explain our work.

What you get

  • To be part of truly mission-driven work that reduces wildfires, protects earth’s natural resources and helps solve our climate crisis.

  • Flexible working environment with a lot of autonomy. We build our work days around our lives, not the other way around.

  • Other benefits like a remote working budget, an educational budget and time to develop new skills.

  • To be surrounded by an excellent, vibrant, smart team who have each other's back and believe in a culture of openness, tolerance and respect.

  • Equity and a competitive salary.

About our team

We are a group of 34 people from all over the world. Eleven nationalities are represented in our team. We work remotely from seven different countries and occasionally (optionally!) meet up for in-person collaboration.

We place enormous value on diversity and inclusion with regards to gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, age, education, disability, disciplines and skillsets. We believe that the best ideas emerge when people with different perspectives and approaches work together on a problem.

We’re always looking to diversify our team further, but we’re proud of the fact that four out of the eight people on our leadership team are female or non-white males, 40% of the overall team identifies as female and 25% of the team are people of color. Our team speaks ten languages: English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Luxembourgish, Indonesian and Cantonese.
