Director, Engineering - Backend

About the Role

As a leader of the Backend team, you and your team own our internal architecture and systems. The Backend team at Pawp is responsible for designing, building, and deploying the features and underlying systems that power our telehealth solution, emergency fund offerings, our API integrations with third-party systems, our recommendations engine, and beyond. This leadership role will elevate the technical capability of the team through pairing, code reviews, and innovation discussions, while building a diverse and vibrant tech culture at Pawp.

What You'll do

• Coach, lead, and mentor a team of 7 Senior - Staff Engineers to design, build, test, deploy, and maintain our technology at scale.

• Be a hands-on leader who provides technical direction and shows wisdom, skill, and a vision.

• Align our engineering team and our resources to support product outcomes.

• Co-pilot initiatives with our FE teams and partner with teams across the business, to align technology outcomes with prioritized initiatives. 

• Collaborate with other Pawp leaders to ensure team health is high, and that we are building trust and diversity across the organization.

What You'll Need

• 8+ years of relevant work experience building complex backend systems with experience leading teams virtually, providing technical direction, and developing people for 3+ years.

• Track record of shipping high-quality products, building API’s, and features at scale in a microservice, distributed environment.

• Experience building business and product ideas into engineering solutions.

• Demonstrated experience in a production environment with our technical stack: Python, GraphQL, AWS, and PosgreSQL.

This role is eligible for remote work or hybrid work. Salary Range is $230-250k + equity + benefits (medical, dental, vision), for candidates local to NYC. 

Actual compensation packages are based on a wide array of factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to geographical location, demonstrated skill set, years and depth of relevant experience, and some role-dependent factors such as certifications and software expertise. We welcome direct conversations with each candidate about compensation in all of our initial calls.
