Communications Officer

The Cooperative AI Foundation (CAIF) has an ambition to bring the topic of cooperative AI into the mainstream discourse. We are looking for an exceptional candidate to fire up our communication efforts, and to generate and manage compelling digital content. You’ll be someone who shares our passion for technology and science, and who is excited about the societal impact that transformative innovation brings. We envisage this role as full time or 0.8 FTE, but are open to considering other options, for example for candidates who have other freelance work in science and technology communications.

The responsibilities of the Communications Officer will include:

  • Writing articles, briefings, policy summaries, and social media posts, turning technical material into accessible and compelling writing for influential policy, business, and media audiences

  • Bringing a deep understanding of our priority audiences' motivations and interests into CAIF; helping to refine our communications strategy in the light of that analysis; scanning for possible openings and connections in adjacent fields

  • Maintaining and regularly updating CAIF website content with cooperative AI news and events, and keeping other website sections such as FAQ and “About Cooperative AI” up to date

  • Promoting CAIF’s activities, success stories of our network and partners, and network announcements (such as calls for grants and fellowships)

  • Owning our social media policy and strategy, and maintaining a rhythm of social media posts in line with our wider communications strategy

  • Tracking external CAIF and cooperative AI mentions

  • Preparing and sending out the CAIF newsletter

  • Responding to general external enquiries about CAIF and Cooperative AI

  • Contributing to the design of a new CRM system, and leading on its day-to-day use in the team. Maintaining a communications dashboard and data for communications and partnership reporting

  • Keeping an external communications calendar up to date

  • Liaising with external contractors in design, editing, or proofreading

  • Crisis communications in situations where the reputation of CAIF or cooperative AI is at risk

  • Supporting the organisation of CAIF events (both in person and online)

Qualifications

Our ideal candidate will be motivated by our mission and values and have strong experience in technology and/or science communication, corporate storytelling, or equivalent roles. You will also have

  • The ability to use storytelling to establish the relevance of cooperative AI, to communicate the essence of technical material for lay audiences, and to inspire people to take action through your writing

  • A keen interest in and curiosity about AI along with a broad understanding of the AI landscape

  • Proficiency in using digital communication tools and platforms

  • Project management skills; effective prioritisation; instinctive team working

‍The following are not essential, but would be a plus:

  • Skills in design tools or website design

  • Experience in events organisation and management (online and hybrid formats)

Benefits

Salaries at CAIF account for demonstrated competencies and location-based cost of living. For this role we expect salaries offered to be between ÂŁ35,000 and ÂŁ40,000. A successful candidate with less prior experience should also expect their salary to increase in the role, contingent on performance.

Location

We are a fully remote organisation, with regular opportunities to meet colleagues in person (team members are currently based in the UK, Sweden, and France). We do not have an office, so the successful candidate will work from home or from a workspace local to them.

‍We are registered in the UK, and do not expect to be able to apply for a UK Skilled Worker visa for this role. We will only be able to consider applications from individuals with permission to work in the UK or who are otherwise able to visit the UK for work purposes.
