
Community Manager
Medium is a home for human stories and ideas. We're looking for an exceptional Community Manager to nurture our vibrant, diverse community of writers, publications, and readers.
As the Community Manager, you'll serve as Medium's liaison to writers and editors by managing writer and community programs, overseeing off-platform Medium communities, sharing information, and fostering engagement on and off Medium.
Your aim will be to create a positive and engaging atmosphere where writers feel appreciated and connected, and where they feel they can succeed in sharing their insights and connecting with an audience. Your efforts will build Medium's presence and trust among the people using our platform, and help writers of all types understand what success looks like on Medium. You'll embody our Humans First approach by building bridges between our team and community.
Key Responsibilities
Community Programs Management
Manage and operate programs for specific cohorts of the Medium community.
Help establish and manage an exclusive invite-only community of Medium members, readers, and writers requiring NDA participation that can serve as an outlet for feedback, communication, and community listening
Oversee logistical aspects of the Boost Nomination Program (BNP), including managing monthly quota emails and handling incoming Zendesk requests
Support writer growth initiatives through managing replies to writer-specific inboxes (for example, replies to academics@medium.com)
Work to create systems that empower, incentivize, and recognize Medium community members
Advocacy
Partnering with our marketing and product teams to drive key messages within our community.
Coordinate with the product team and product marketing to effectively communicate updates and changes across existing community spaces
Partner with marketing and content team to champion our brand positioning, messaging, and key differentiators within existing Medium communities
Community Cultivation and Support
Supporting our community directly and in off-platform spaces.
Deliver white-glove service to key community members and writers, ensuring they feel supported and valued
Build and foster relationships with new publications on our platform (ex: new DS pub)
Provide thoughtful responses to community members’ questions
Manage or support external community spaces, like the Medium subreddit
Engage with promising new writers by offering resources, invitations to our new writer webinars, and other community events
Explore new outlets and engagement strategies to connect with our community and communities of potential writers, such as social media replies, Facebook groups, events, writing prompts, and emerging writer spaces
On-Platform Engagement
Spending a lot of time on Medium.com.
Monitor and respond to Medium Blog post replies
Welcome and engage with new writers through comments, claps, and highlights on their first posts
Provide clarification and responses to Medium meta posts (stories about Medium, on Medium) on the platform
Find and engage with community success stories, and partner with the Content team to amplify them through Medium’s various channels (Staff Picks, Lists, the Medium Blog)
You'll also be required to attend Medium’s twice-yearly, in-person offsites (hosted in locations around the U.S.).
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
3+ years of community management experience, preferably in online spaces
Exceptional written communication skills with an empathetic, humans-first approach
Experience managing online communities and fostering productive discussions
Strong problem-solving abilities and conflict resolution skills
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple community initiatives simultaneously
Passion for building authentic connections in digital spaces
Experience with the Medium community and writing on Medium is a plus
