Senior Analyst

At Medium, we connect millions of readers with great stories every day, and we throw off data in the process–a lot of data. This data helps us match readers and stories better, informs product initiatives, and drives key business decisions. We're looking for an experienced analyst to wade into this flood of data with us and pan for gold.

Key Responsibilities

• Proactively identify valuable areas of investigation—where can we most profitably improve our understanding of our members, writers, and overall business?

• Work with diverse stakeholders to improve visibility and insight in their zones

• Run investigations, small and large, for leadership and other stakeholders

• Mentor engineers and other stakeholders to improve their own analytics capabilities

• Positively contribute to the broader data culture and ecosystem at Medium

• Attend Medium’s twice-yearly, in-person offsites (hosted in locations around the U.S.)

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

“Analyst” is a broad description, and great candidates for this job could come from a broad array of backgrounds. If you’re a traditional analyst, strong on SQL and statistics fundamentals, who is proactive and curious, we’d love to talk to you. If you’re an engineer who has spent time in the data engineering space, has a reasonable grasp of statistics, and is proactive and eager to learn more, we’d love to talk to you. If you’re a data scientist who has increasingly enjoyed getting your hands dirty pulling and cleaning your own data, we’d love to talk to you. What matters most is that:

• You know your way around data—you have a minimum of 8 years experience in a data-facing role like analyst, data scientist, or data engineer

• You’ve got experience with SQL

• You’re solid on basic stats, either through education or on-the-job experience; bonus points if you’ve expanded into data science and / or machine learning

• You have a history of, and passion for, proactively generating practical insights through data

• You have a passion for two-sided marketplaces, membership businesses, publishing or all of the above

• You have an established history of cross-team collaboration
