Director, Accounting (Remote, US)

Role Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented Director of Accounting to take ownership of the financial reporting process and payroll oversight. In this role, you will bridge the gap between operational accounting and high-level financial reporting. You will bring deep expertise across financial reporting, technical accounting, IPO readiness, payroll management, SOX compliance, and mergers & acquisitions. You will work with outsourced team members to manage complex accounting and our outsourced payroll providers. This is a critical role for someone strong in US GAAP who enjoys process improvement and cross-functional collaboration.

What You Will Do

Technical Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Lead technical accounting assessments for new standard implementations (ASC 606, ASC 842, ASC 805)

  • Collaborate with FP&A to ensure proper GL coding and implement process improvements

  • Prepare intercompany entries with outsourced team members, ensuring Tax and GAAP compliance

  • Review quarterly debt covenant reports and assist in audited financial statements and investor reporting

  • Oversee stock-based compensation accounting in accordance with ASC 718

Payroll Accounting & Oversight

  • Review and approve bi-monthly US payroll register; high-level review of Canadian payroll

  • Maintain internal controls for payroll cycle, validating inputs from People Operations

  • Own payroll GL mapping within Rippling; prepare journal entries, reconciliations, and accruals

  • Oversee new state/provincial payroll tax registrations and compliance

  • Partner with People Operations and vendors to optimize payroll processes and automation

Audit, Compliance & Tax

  • Support annual audits and quarterly internal control testing

  • Ensure compliance with sales tax and franchise/business tax; review partnership entity taxes and K-1s

  • Prepare process flow documentation and risk-control matrix for SOX compliance

Operational Accounting & Ad-Hoc

  • Review and approve journal entries and reconciliations from outsourced team members

  • Manage insurance renewals, COIs, and claims

  • Collaborate with departments for month-end close and ad-hoc reporting

Requirements

  • CPA (active license) with bachelor’s degree in accounting

  • Renewable industry experience required

  • 10–15+ years of progressive accounting experience (mix of public/private preferred)

  • Big 4 or Tier II Audit firm experience required; M&A experience a plus

  • Strong technical accounting skills, SOX compliance, IPO readiness

  • Advanced Excel; familiarity with Rippling and AI tools

  • Deep US GAAP knowledge (revenue recognition, payroll accruals, intercompany transactions, reporting)

  • Experience managing offshore teams and collaborating cross-functionally

  • Experience with external US/international payroll vendors
