Head of Design
Mission
Behavioral health is more important than ever. But almost half of behavioral health clinicians report that they spend 5+ hrs per day on administrative work. Some of that admin work happens “in the room” during patient visits but no matter where it happens, we believe it’s too much.
JotPsych’s mission is to defeat admin work and let clinicians practice human-centered healthcare.
We already reduce note taking time by 90%. But we’re just getting started. Billing, appointment scheduling, e-prescriptions, and more are right around the bend.
JotPsych: Background and Context
JotPsych | Spend less time on patient notes with our behavioral health scribe software
đź›— Elevator pitch: JotPsych software listens to behavioral health providers while they talk to their patients (with consent, of course). A few seconds after the patient leaves the room, the provider already has a robust draft of the medical note waiting for them. Super customizable, easy to integrate with any current workflow. Medical note completely done and submitted for insurance reimbursement before the next patient enters the room. No more typing during the session, no more catching up on notes at home in the evening. Eye contact and peace of mind.
🚀 JotPsych is a post-revenue, seed-stage software startup backed by Base10. The product currently reduces administrative time for behavioral health clinicians by 90% and is expanding to encompass other clinical and administrative workflows.
⛓️ JotPsych was founded by Nate Peereboom and Jackson Bierfeldt. Nate’s mom was a nurse practitioner, so he grew up in the shadow of overwhelming medical documentation. Jackson is a language and audio nerd, and when GPT-3 hit the market, he knew something could be done here. The company is currently ~12 FTE.
🚀 JotPsych has scribed for nearly 1 million patient encounters.

Role
As the Head of Design, you will be the visionary and hands-on leader behind the design of JotPsych’s user experience (UX) and interface (UI), ensuring our product remains intuitive, engaging, and highly functional. You will collaborate closely with our product and engineering teams to design seamless experiences for our users, with an emphasis on user research and feedback integration.
While the primary focus of this role is on product design, you will also oversee the creation of marketing assets, ensuring consistent branding across our marketing and conference materials. Your role will balance high-level strategic thinking with the ability to roll up your sleeves and execute beautiful, functional designs.
Key Responsibilities:
Product Design Leadership: Own and lead the end-to-end design process for JotPsych’s user interface and experience, working closely with product management and engineering teams to translate complex workflows into simple, effective designs.
User-Centered Design: Conduct user research, usability testing, and feedback sessions to deeply understand the needs of mental health providers, incorporating those insights into the product design.
Design Systems & Standards: Develop and maintain a robust design system and set of design standards that ensure consistency, scalability, and a polished, cohesive product experience.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with product, engineering, and data science teams to define design requirements, iterate on wireframes, prototypes, and designs, and ensure a seamless handoff of design specifications.
Marketing & Branding Support: While product design is your primary focus, you will also provide strategic oversight and execution for marketing and event materials (e.g., brochures, presentations, digital content) to ensure consistent visual identity across all platforms.
Event Design: Oversee the creation of design assets for conferences and trade shows, including booth designs, banners, and promotional materials that align with the product’s story and values.
Creative Leadership: Serve as a thought leader in design, promoting a culture of innovation, creativity, and user-centric thinking across the company.
Requirements
We’re looking for a team member with wildly high insight, and dogged work ethic. See Who and how we hire per above for more details. This particular role requires a great deal of flexibility, confidence, and attention to detail. Here is some more of what we’re looking for:
Experience: 7+ years of experience in a design leadership role, with an emphasis on product design (UI/UX), and a strong portfolio showcasing your work in SaaS or digital products.
Curiosity-Driven Design: A demonstrated passion for deeply understanding user behaviors, with a knack for “reading between the lines” and identifying underlying needs that aren’t explicitly stated. You are always asking why and digging into the unspoken, revealed preferences of users, not just their expressed desires.
Over-the-Shoulder Research: Experience with hands-on, observational research methods—whether that’s sitting with users as they interact with the product or conducting contextual inquiries—gaining insights that go beyond traditional surveys and focus groups.
User-Centered Thinking: An ability to translate these deep insights into intuitive, user-focused designs. You excel at uncovering the small details that enhance usability while maintaining a broader vision of how these insights fit into the overall product experience.
Product Design Expertise: Proficiency in creating wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs, with an emphasis on usability and user research. You know how to bring a product to life by balancing aesthetics with function, and you iterate based on data and real user feedback.
Technical Skills: Mastery of design tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite, and prototyping tools like InVision or similar.
Design Systems Thinker: Experience in building and scaling design systems that enable consistency and efficiency across product interfaces while leaving room for creativity where it counts.
Collaboration: Strong communicator and collaborator, capable of working closely with product managers, engineers, and stakeholders to champion the user’s perspective throughout the design process.
Adaptability: Comfortable in a fast-paced startup environment, with the ability to pivot as needed and scale design efforts efficiently.

Application process
First, email us (designer_app@jotpsych.com) to introduce yourself and explain why you want to work at JotPsych. Keep it short (200 words or less) but professional. Include your resume, LinkedIn, and portfolio (if you have it).
The Subject of the email must include the palette (🎨) emoji…. because this role includes (but is not limited to!) correct use of metaphorical color!
Second, we’ll ask you to construct a feature design based on a set of materials we provide you. This will require ~2 hrs of at-home work, along with a 60 minute interview about your process, the “why” behind your design choices, and more.
Third, we’ll do 3 reference checks.
Fourth, we’ll choose a small cohort (2-3) of you for a weekend of co-working together. We’ll fly you to DC if you don’t live here, and by day we’ll jam on a design problem. In the evenings, we’ll gather around the table for structured conversations about product direction, strategy, and vision.
If you just “Easy apply” on LinkedIn, we won’t look at your application.
