Systems Engineer
Who We Are
Every organization runs on intelligence: years of accumulated knowledge, decisions, and context. As AI takes on more of that work, companies face a choice: rent that intelligence from vendors who keep the data, the context, and the results, or own it.
OpenTeams exists to make ownership possible.
Founded by Travis Oliphant, creator of NumPy and SciPy, and built by people with deep roots across the open-source ecosystem, including NumPy, SciPy, PyTorch, and Jupyter, we help enterprises and governments build AI they control, govern, and evolve themselves.
If that sounds like your kind of work, we'd like to meet you.
Senior Infrastructure Engineer - AI/ML Platform
Location: U.S - Remote Work Authorization: U.S. citizenship required Clearance: Active clearance not required at hire. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance. Salary Range: $85,000 - $120,000 USD, dependent on experience and location
About the Role
We’re looking for a Systems Engineer to join our platform support team. This is a role for someone early in their infrastructure career who wants real ownership of production systems and is willing to earn it by being the person others can count on.
The work runs across two streams:
Internal Platforms: Systems OpenTeams itself runs on — identity, cloud, internal applications, website.
Project Support: Backing up infrastructure engineers on platforms we build and operate for customers, including government programs.
Both streams start at the front line. As you build context, scope grows toward environment builds, deployment configuration, and eventually owning pieces of a platform outright.
This is a fully remote, U.S.-based role working with a distributed team that relies heavily on asynchronous communication.
Key Responsibilities
Internal Platforms
Own the internal request queue: triage, resolve, escalate, and track requests
Administer Google Workspace and identity systems (accounts, groups, SSO, onboarding/offboarding)
Support cloud infrastructure provisioning and maintenance (AWS or equivalent)
Deploy and operate internal applications on Kubernetes using Helm and ArgoCD
Maintain the internal OpenTeams website (Astro + EmDash) including pipelines, DNS, and publishing support
Build and maintain monitoring and alerting, reducing noise rather than adding to it
Handle security and access hygiene: patching, MFA, access reviews, endpoint configuration
Project Support
Handle incoming issues from customer teams: reproduce, gather logs, resolve or escalate
Execute deployment and maintenance runbooks against customer environments
Track issues through closure and maintain accurate customer-facing status
Assist with hardening and compliance work (configurations, evidence gathering, documentation)
Grow into environment builds, configuration changes, and platform ownership
Share learnings across internal and customer systems
Across Both
Participate in incident response and contribute to system-focused postmortems
Collaborate with a fully remote, distributed team using asynchronous communication
Required Skills & Experience
1–3 years in IT support, systems administration, or infrastructure work
Comfortable in Linux and command line (filesystems, logs, systemd, SSH)
Understanding of networking fundamentals (DNS, DHCP, HTTP/TLS, VPNs, firewalls)
Scripting ability in Python and/or Bash
Comfortable with Git and pull request workflows
Exposure to at least one major cloud provider and containers
Experience administering SaaS tools (Google Workspace, Slack, etc.)
Strong written communication skills for tickets, PRs, and documentation
Service orientation and willingness to learn
U.S. citizenship and eligibility for security clearance
Preferred Qualifications
Working knowledge of SQL and relational databases
Hands-on Kubernetes experience (kubectl, Helm, logs/events)
Exposure to GitOps tooling (ArgoCD, Flux) or CI/CD pipelines
Infrastructure-as-code experience (Terraform, Pulumi, Ansible, etc.)
Familiarity with identity/SSO standards (OIDC, SAML, Keycloak)
Experience with monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry)
Frontend/static site experience (Astro, headless CMS)
Familiarity with Python data science ecosystem or JupyterHub
Security+ or comparable certification
Exposure to regulated/government environments (RMF, NIST 800-53, FedRAMP)
Open source contribution of any size
