Senior Data Engineer (Data Platform) (m/f/d)

This is a full-time position based in Germany or Poland. We are a remote-first organization and support mobile and flexible working.

Objective of the Role

Our Data Platform Engineering team is crucial to our success in working with data. You help us maintain, shape and enhance our data infrastructure to enable innovation across all data functions. By keeping data flowing through our pipelines, you ensure we can make data-informed decisions. Most importantly, you will make an impact for 25+ million scientists around the world, who themselves have an impact on 8 billion peoples’ lives via their research.

The team

The team we are hiring for is part of the platform engineering department and consists of data engineers, with a broad spectrum of experience in managing big data pipelines. Their support enables our product, analytics and business teams on a daily basis. 

Collaboration is critical to our team’s success; team members ask for and offer help on each others’ projects and own objectives collectively, and we work closely with stakeholders in Product and other Engineering teams. We balance pragmatic solutions within our existing tech stack with forward-facing experiments, trying new solutions, employing new technologies, and informing ResearchGate’s Data Platform strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Engineer efficient, adaptable and scalable data architectures to make building and maintaining big data applications easy and enjoyable for others.

  • Work with key big data technologies including Hadoop, Flink, and Kafka and help to migrate them into Cloud.

  • Data ingestion (work with third-party tooling like Debezium and Kafka Connect plugins)

  • Take ownership for continuous maintenance and improvement of components of our data platform.

  • Act as a technical leader to drive the evolution of our data platform in collaboration with backend engineering, data science and analytics teams.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience as a Data Platform Engineer or Data Engineer.

  • Strong experience with Google Cloud Platform or a different cloud provider 

  • Proficient knowledge in Python (Experience in Java is a bonus)

  • Understanding of DevOps: running applications in Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code using terraform, cloud security principles.

  • Experience with big data technologies (Hadoop and Flink) and as a bonus operating at petabyte scale.

  • You are energized by teaching and learning from your teammates, engaging in brainstorming and pair-programming sessions, and giving and getting peer-to-peer feedback

The Interview Process:

  • You will interview with several ResearchGate team members, including your hiring manager, potential teammates, and senior leadership. Your interview process will include experience-based interviews, technical challenges, and a Data pipeline case study.
